Spotlight | Grade 4 Texas Studies Project

Blended Learning in Action

Recently, Grade 4 students completed Texas Studies project following our educational model of Research, Produce, Present. In Grade 4, students study Texas history, and their teacher, Mrs. Fitchie, decided to take their learning deeper by studying Texas symbols in a new way.

Their unit began with researching and completing an in-depth graphic organizer about Texas symbols, anthems, and mottos. Following the graphic organizer research, they used the information they found to write a short essay about Texas using three descriptive words that reminded them of their state.

Taking the unit to the STEAM Lab, they partnered up to create a model of one of the Texas symbols. From bluebonnets to the tried and true longhorn, our students covered what makes Texas so wonderful. They used a combination of craft and recycled materials to produce pieces for display.

Where the project gets even more unique is when the class traveled across the campus to work with our Jr. High 3D modeling class to design and produce a 3D keychain with one of their chosen descriptive words worked into their design. Upper School 3D Modeling Teacher, Mrs. Adams, gave a short lesson on the basics of 3D design, and Grade 8 3D modeling students offered support to the younger students while designing their creation.

This project furthered the students’ learning by engaging them throughout a multi-subject study of Texas symbols. It was a great opportunity for older students to mentor younger students in a new skill and to encourage our younger students to rise to a new challenge.

It was really fun! We learned that it takes time to finish designing something. I liked that we got to go down the the BLC and see how they do things.
— Jack Heptner, Grade 4

Students learned to design and manipulate renderings on their iPads with older students to help them before sending their designs to print on the 3D printers.
