ELEMENTARY | Grades K-5
THE WHOLE CHILD
Our elementary program emphasizes the development of the whole child, providing for each child’s social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs. Students are challenged to stretch beyond what is comfortable in a safe, blended-learning environment where they hone their writing, speaking, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
Elementary educational approach
-
Students research and present topics. This approach helps students build the foundational skills of writing, speaking, problem-solving, and leadership. We focus on foundational skills to prepare students for the rigors of Upper School.
-
The blended learning environment fosters choice and flexibility that builds to the next grade level and eventually Upper School. At this level, the curriculum is Web-supported with some opportunities for digital learning but is primarily based on face-to-face interactions that foster student and teacher relationships.
Tech is age-appropriate.
There is a blend of hands-on and digital learning.
Digital skills and technology opportunities are built as students progress through the grades. Grades 3 – 5 have more digital assignments than K through grade 2.
Technology is used for research and presenting, homework activities, and foreign language exposure with Rosetta Stone.
1:1 iPads
-
Saxon math is a spiraling curriculum that deepens math concepts. Math is advanced, so students are ready for Algebra 1 by grade 8.
-
Teachers use a writing curriculum, Step Up to Writing, that specifically helps students organize their thoughts so they can focus on the hard work of analysis and creativity.
-
Teachers have training in specialized reading techniques such as phonemic awareness and phonics to ensure all students learn to read.
-
Bible is taught as a course, but a biblical worldview is infused into all content areas through the use of our schoolwide overarching essential question: How does (what we are learning) show us about man’s fall and the struggle to find redemption and restoration? This question is phrased for each grade level.
-
Supplemental enrichment opportunities are chapel, PE, Music, STEAM and Discovery Labs, and Art. Academy opportunities include basketball, golf, pep squad, tennis, volleyball, and Visual and Performing Arts academies.
