The Art of Ornaments

Trim the Tree

In December all of the students at Christ Academy created ornaments to decorate the many trees around campus. The ornaments were then sent home with the students to add to their Christmas trees at home.

While ornament art is a holiday tradition it serves two purposes. One, it can improve coordination between the right and left sides of the brain, as well as, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Two, it offered a valuable art history lesson for our Upper School students.

Upper School students made Dale Chihuly-inspired ornaments from recycled water bottles and sharpie markers. Students cut the water bottles, melted them, and formed them into the desired shapes. The Junior High art students also made repousse, foil-embossed ornaments using two layers of heavy foil & sharpie markers.

All ornaments are original designs. No two are alike.
— Anne Smith, Upper School Art Teacher

Our Lower School students made marbleized ornaments. They are clear glass orbs with acrylic paint swirled on the inside.

Not only are they beautiful, but they are also unique to each child. Not to mention they make wonderful Christmas keepsakes!
