Spotlight | Grade 2
RESEARCH + PRODUCE + PRESENT
Recently, grade two read books and studied various maps and skills related to maps. The students also watched videos and used songs and dancing to help learn NSEW (north, south, east, west) directions.
The students completed several practice activities for maps and map skills. Mrs. Heptner, the second grade teacher, has the directions posted in the classroom at all times, as well.
After learning the fundamentals of maps and cartography, they went outside to the playground to put their skills to use. The students helped determine the directions, and from there, worked to create a map together. They then produced the map on their own. They became cartographers and got to choose the way they drew the symbols for their map key.
After reading a book, Me on the Map, the class created a flip chart that helped the students understand their place on Earth. They started with themselves and zoomed out (street, city, state, country, continent, and the planet).
Finally, the students presented their flip charts to the class.
