Spotlight | Grade 2 Black History Month Projects 2025
Research + Produce + Present in action
Each year, Grade 2 embarks on an in-depth research project during Black History Month, focusing on influential African Americans who have shaped our history. Students explore the lives and contributions of civil rights leaders, athletes, artists, musicians, scientists, and political figures who have made a lasting impact on society. At CA, we call this style of learning Research + Produce + Present.
The research phase begins with students reading and gathering key details using safe search engines and library resources. As they learn about their historical figure, they organize their findings into a graphic organizer to help them write a short biography, highlighting their person’s accomplishments and character.
In the produce stage, students bring their research to life by creating a folio folder filled with their biography, key facts, and descriptive words that capture their figure’s legacy. They also design and illustrate a personalized book, incorporating their research and artwork about their person and Black History Month. Every piece—writing, drawing, and coloring—is done by the students, making the project truly their own.
Finally, in the present stage, students share their projects with classmates and family, creating a sense of accomplishment in what they’ve learned and created. Throughout the month, they also engage in activities like finding adjectives that describe their historical figure, reading books about other influential individuals, and painting watercolor portraits. Mrs. Duke leads conversations about God’s design for all people, encouraging students to see the value in every individual and treat others with kindness and respect, just as Jesus did.
